Our story starts in New Koutali, a small fishing village on the Greek island of Lemnos. In 1958, Emmanouel Psarras, my grandfather, began his diving career as a sponge diver.
His passion for the sea and dedication to his craft led him to purchase his own boat and explore sponge-rich waters across the Aegean—and even as far as Libya and Tunisia. Through his efforts, he became one of the leading sponge divers of his era.
In the late 1970s, the next generation stepped in. My father, Panagiotis Varnalis, took over the family business and focused on developing the processing and trading aspects of sea sponges.
In 1997, I joined the company and helped modernize our operations, expanding the range and quality of our final products. Spongean began handling sponges not only from the Greek seas but also from the wider Mediterranean and Caribbean, marking the beginning of our global outreach.
Today, Spongean is a trusted name in the sea sponge industry, supplying spas, hotels, retailers, and individuals worldwide. Our divers harvest select marine areas with care, using sustainable methods that promote sponge regeneration and protect underwater ecosystems.
